Rākau o te riri
Cast of a patu rakau. Painted dark brown. Handle flares out at the butt, with a notch on the proximal edge. Blade is made of a set of seven projections on each side edge. Each projection has a ridge which connects a centre ridge running the length of the blade. There is a human facial carving at the distal end, depicting eyebrows, eyes, a nose, lips and chin.
Partially complete patu paraoa. One side of the butt and small part of an edge of the blade have broken off. Knob on remaining side of butt and then slightly reduced at the handle. Deep centre groove on one side, just below the handle.
Broken patu onewa, butt remaining. Four ornamental grooves with a drilled perforation and no tau. Broken at the perforation.
Complete patu paraoa. Patu is complete, but very chipped around sides of the blade. Sides taper on the handle, and then flare at the butt to form a knob. Surface is smooth on one side, and rough on the other.
Broken patu onewa, perforated proximal portion of the handle remaining, previously broken and glued back together.
Broken patu paraoa, portion of handle and butt remaining.
Complete patu paraoa. The handle that attaches to the blade has been previously broken, it is affixed with an adhesive. The Butt of the weapon has also been previously damaged and has been glued back on. Over the broken areas a white/beige coloured paint has been applied. On the underside of the Patu it is quite hollow, due to the natural structure of the bone.
Complete wahaika made of wood. Notch on one side of blade. Carved figure protruding from upper blade, creating two perforations. Figure has carved tattoo marks on body. Carved face on butt, with one perforation at the base of the head and another perforation created from its open mouth.
Incomplete patu paraoa with no perforation. Butt and handle portion are missing from the patu. Surface has substantial cracking, scratching and chipping. Edges of blade also have chipping. Underside of the patu has a deep impression to the side of the blade, as-well as four other major chips primarily to the sides (light portions). Substantial cracking is also present on the underside.
Cast of patu onewa. Sides reduced where blade meets handle, forming a shoulder.
Complete patu paraoa. Marked shoulders, small neck expanding to proximal knob. 7 flat ridges on each side of butt. Straight sided square shaped perforation. Large chip out of distal end, right side. Discoloured in patches.
Broken patu onewa, blade remaining. There is chipping and a green substance (wax or glue?) at the broken top of the blade and at the end.
