Piupiu

Complete piupiu with degradation at the waistband. The flax tags are scraped and unscraped, forming decorative horizontal bands. The first and third rows of exposed flax have been dyed with a dark dye. The tags are accompanied by six twisted whenu (strand) decorations which originally ended in tassels. Two tassels remain. The waistband is approximately 4cm wide with two weft rows. There is remnants of a blue dye in the waistband. The top of the waistband is whiri (plaited), with the whiri having come loose along the top of the garment. Ties are evident at each end of the waistband, with one ending in a tassel. There are seven loose tags that have come away from the garment accompanying the object.
