Archives

Tūhura Otago Museum’s Archives collect, preserve, and make accessible nearly 150 years’ worth of the museum’s historical records, from its origins as a department of the University of Otago though to the present day. Holdings include records related to the development of the museum as an institution, and the development of its collections, correspondence from the museum’s directors and curators, records related to the museum’s research undertakings, archaeological excavations in the South Island and major capital developments.

The archives include a growing collection of digital records, thanks in part to the Friends of Tūhura. The Friends have provided thousands of volunteer hours summarising and digitising records with guidance from the archivist, Gareth West.
