Waka huia

Complete waka huia, oval shaped. Lid has two very large and well-carved human figures, a copulating couple. Inside lid has lip to fit into base. The base is decorated in rauponga whakarare running lengthways and widthwise through the centre. The rest of the space is filled with rauponga pattern that radiate outwards from the centre. There is faded black and red paint in the grooves. Each end of the box has a figure with torso on box and elongated neck with head forming knob. These heads are broken from the eyes down, missing lower face. One figure is male, the other is female. Eyes of all heads in formed of small double spirals.
