Waka huia, Cord

Complete waka huia made of kauri with braided muka cord for suspension. Mid brown and red in colour. Shape is an elongated oval. Exterior of the box has a male figure carved at each ends, with protruding heads for suspension knobs and bodies carved with geometric patterns. The bottom and sides of the box are divided into quadrats with diagonal rauponga (ridge and triangular notch) pattern. Interior is smooth and undecorated. Top of the lid has copulating couple carved in high relief along centre line as a handle. Rest of lid divided into eight sections with carved diagonal rauponga pattern. Inside of lid is flattened and undecorated, with a broken notch at one end.
