Collection Record

Adze, Toki

Complete unfinished adze. Dark grey stone. Asymmetrical cross-section. The surface is mostly bruised and flaked with a ground bevel. There is a reduction in the stone on the back from beneath the middle of the blade to the poll. There is a reduction in the stone on the back of the butt, which tapers towards an edge at the poll. There is no distinction between the butt and the blade on the front. The proper left side of the blade is relatively straight from poll to cutting edge, whereas the proper right side is concave and tapers from the cutting edge to the poll. The bevel is demarcated by an oblique line of bruising. The cutting edge is curved, sharp and asymmetrical.
