Waka huia

Complete waka huia made from totara. Mid-brown in colour and stained red in some portions. Cross section is U-shaped. Lid and the interior of the box are lenticular, with straight, squared off ends and a flat bottom. There is a handle along the exterior centre of the lid created by four overlapping manaia figures, with various perforations and minimal carvings. The exterior sides of both the lid and the box surface are divided into quadrants with a curved rauponga (ridge and triangular notch) pattern. There is a human head carving protruding off each end of the box, used for suspension.
