Detailed story of how lintel was acquired inc initial refusal as work was tapu and was in process of being replaced with new carvings. Comment new work in progress was poor quality compared to old work. Goffe and ?great grand son of Mr Matua the 1st ? Put some pieces in a separate pile. Someone cleaned up scrub / fern around other stack of pieces and they caught fire and burned. Agreement ? that Goffe could acquire remaining pieces.

letter, 12/06/1934, Goffe to H D Skinner, Lintel is shipped. When acquired from Tipene was very soiled and full of old paint or Kokowai. Cleaned with caustic soda and other, dressed with linseed oil. Has another small, very old carving dug up in sand dunes in Tolomanu Bay in 1906. Also fine Taiahas, beautifully carved. Will follow up carvers of lintel, poss by people of East Coast ?
