Correspondence, Correspondence between Stuart Park, John Daniels and Jim McKinlay. A letter to Jim R. McKinlay from Stuart Park regarding the Wallace County District Scheme. No year mentioned, presume 1969 or 70. Park states he's read over the scheme quickly and focused in on more relevant sections more carefully, and that he has a number of comments that could or could not be used. Site records for this are are not very full, they give locations but seldom much more, making it hard for id a site should be included or not, goes on to list two groups of sites, those Park believes important and those that McKinlay may wish to look at, and a third group that is unimportant sites, not listed. The version of the scheme Park saw did not include Planning Data Map, which includes Upukaroa development, but did include plans for the county towns. The only site involved there is S140/1, states this is one of Peter's provisional forms that John Daniels doesn't have access to. Reported to be a Maori village at Te Anau township, but location has never been satisfactory, so hard to make into a reserve. That covers sites threatened by urban development, roading, ect. Moving into sites worthy of being made reserves. s140/2 'Provisional' Takahe Valley rock shelter, a restricted area that is well protected, gone over by an official party, unsure of any remains. S150/1 Little known. Russel Beck of Southland Museum thinks it may be the site for "D'Urville" argillite-important if so. S167/1 Hauroko Burial site. Protected by the Fiordland Park Board, unsure if in Wallace or Eiord Counties. s167/12,15-17 Rock paintings on limestone in the Clifden area, only ones known of south of the Waitaki basin. S1751 Classic Pa, one of very few in Murihiku, little remains but certainly a historic place, notes to see a file where the name 'Kiri-o-tunu' is given. S175/10 Sand Hill Pt. Already and L and S reserve, included in the scheme. Other sites, S167/2-11,13-14 Sundry occupation sites found during survey work after the Hauroko investigation. S175/2-9 Could include some important sites, sketchily recorded. S176/1-18 A vast continuum of sites along the Wakapatu bay, includes a couple of sites dug by Charles Higham. Finishes letter by apologising for it being scrappy due to lack of site records in the area, especially in Southland. A letter from John Daniels to Stuart Park 30th October 1970. Stating that Daniels has attached notes from Jim McKinlay he been unsure what to do with, Daniels cannot make site records himself, asks if Park is planning to do this. Daniels asks Park to let him know what he plans to do with the notes, states they'd be better made into site records, but if not possible, to let Daniels know the map(s) the sites are on and that he will file the notes as is.
