letter, 05/04/1933 to University Council, University of Otago, Acknowledge receipt of the sum of 60 pounds has been granted to the Department of Biology for paying demonstrators, the sum is inadequate for the work performed. There should be uniformity in the amounts paid assistants in various departments. Chemistry on one hand has 200 pounds for six assistants, Physics 60/8/ for five assistants and Biology 60 pounds for four assistants. Those with higher degrees such as M.Sc. should be paid more than student demonstrators and time and quantity of students should be considers. 30 pounds is given for four hours of work in chemistry, the same should stand in the Biology department, and extra 15 pounds should be paid as the worker does two more hours than Chemistry do. Blakely is needed for 12 hours, so on the chemistry payment scale he should be getting 90 pounds, I do not ask for that amount, but if I pay even the usual 30 pounds to the demonstrators with degrees in M.Sc. that leaves nothing for the student demonstrators. I ask for an allotment of 100 pounds to the department for the four assistants. With the large class numbers (122), experienced men are needed, each are worth more than two untrained men, they take responsibility for periods of the class. The fees of this class should be enough to cover the cost involved with teaching.
