Skinner to The Chancellor, Following the death of Mrs Hocken in South Africa a considerable sum from the estate of the late T M Hocken estate has come to the University of Otago. Quote from his speech in 1894 "Were it in my power I would found a chair for studies for studies such as these" In view of these wishes I suggest the salary paid to the lecturer in ethnology be debited from this fund and called "The Hocken lectureship in Polynesian Ethnology
