Special Exhibition
Luminous paintings, intricately carved taonga pūoro and beautiful music.
Ngā Hau Ngākau (Breath of Mine) was created by painter Robin Slow, master-carver Brian Flintoff, and musician Bob Bickerton. It features 36 paintings, 34 carvings, and a soundscape and video by Bickerton, with vocals and taonga pūoro (Māori musical instruments) by musicians Ariana Tikao, Holly Weir-Tikao and Solomon Rahui.
The exhibition evokes the form of the Whare Whakairo (carved meeting house dedicated to manu (birds), treasured in Māori mythology as messengers that connect the physical and the spiritual realms. Acknowledging birds as 'Atua Tāngata Whenua', the original ancestors of Aotearoa, the exhibition honours the ancient whakapapa of ngā manu and offers a different perspective to consider the contemporary human experience in Aotearoa.
