Workshop
This NZ Music Month, get hands-on with one of Aotearoa's most captivating taoka pūoro – the porotiti.
In this all-ages workshop, you'll craft your very own porotiti under the guidance of University of Otago Associate Professor Jennifer
Cattermole, then learn how to play it and discover the stories and traditions behind the instrument.
An experienced player, maker, and educator with a deep knowledge of Māori and Pacific music, Jennifer is one of New Zealand's leading ethnomusicologists and a passionate advocate for taoka pūoro. She is the author of Echoes from Hawaiki, which traces the origins and evolution of taoka pūoro in Aotearoa.
Whether you're five or eighty-five, this is a wonderful opportunity to connect with a living piece of New Zealand's musical heritage and take something home that you made yourself.
