Hou Rongo offers an immersive look at the culture of New Zealand's indigenous Moriori people, blending tradition with innovative technology to evoke the feeling of being on Rēkohu
Special Exhibition
Hou Rongo offers an immersive look at the culture of New Zealand's indigenous Moriori people, blending tradition with innovative technology to evoke the feeling of being on Rēkohu (the Chatham Islands) amid the realms of the etchu (elements).
Large video projections and an atmospheric soundscape will transport you to this special place, while replicas of the only two known historic Moriori flutes allow you to handle objects that would otherwise be unavailable. A rarely seen rākau momori (tree carving) will also be displayed, and you can closely inspect the details of another rākau momori figure through augmented reality.
This exhibition was developed through a partnership of the Hokotehi Moriori Trust and a multidisciplinary team of researchers at the University of Otago, with support from an MBIE Smart Ideas Grant.
