Rākau o te riri

Incomplete patu onewa, butt and handle present, drilled perforation, no tau. Reduced where the butt meets the handle.

Complete patu paraoa. The length of the blade has deep natural groves. The handle also has a groove through it. The butt has a circular perforation.

Complete patu paraoa. Handle has a circular perforation.

Complete tewhatewha. The upper edge of the blade is curved, with a slight slope to it. The lower edge of the blade is curved, with a small perforation near the shaft. The cross-section of the upper shaft is lenticular, becoming circular on the lower. The surface of the tewhatewha is fully carved. The blade has a rauru spiral on either side, with partial spirals filling in gaps around the edges. The shaft of the tewhatewha is carved with three haehae followed by a row of pakati in a variety of patterns; alternating linear then curved as it goes down the tewhatewha. Approximately 40cm from the bottom of the tewhatewha there is a carved face with missing paua shell inlay.

Complete huata or tao (spear). Wooden rod with a smooth, undecorated surface. Tapers to a blunt point at one end and a flattened, bevelled edge on the other end. Carved inscription "NA MANAMA" near the blunt end.

Complete taiaha. Surface is worked smooth and polished. Human face carved on each side at the proximal end. Protruding tongue has a rauru (spiral and notch) pattern. Two eyes have paua shell inlays intact. Blade is narrow and rounded, with a large chip missing from the edge.

Complete taiaha. Roughly carved human faces on each side of the proximal end. Metal drawing pins in three of the four eyes (perforation visible where one is missing). Unfinished spiral incised markings on one side of protruding tongue. Dark dyed twisted piece of fibre tied around the centre of the blade.

Complete taiaha. Proximal end carved with human face in high relief on each side. Protruding tongue has a rauru (double spiral with notches) pattern. Blade is undecorated, flaring out to the distal edge, with a chip broken off one side.

Complete wahaika rakau. It has a perforation that is rectangular and has been chipped out. It has whakairo on both sides and the top of the head, and also on both sides of the body. It has a carved human figure below the handle with shell inlays for eyes. It is well polished.

Stone patu, black colouration, hole at handle end with 2-ply twisted twine tied through as a handle. Five incised lines at end of handle. Complete patu onewa, with drill perforation and fibre cord tau. Curved reke on the butt. Minor chipping on edge of blade on both sides. Blade smooth and highly polished.

Broken patu paraoa, butt of handle remaining. Bone is worn and porous.

Complete taiaha. The arero (tongue) is decorated with rauponga style carving (rows alternating with notches) on both sides. The upoko (head) has two sets of inset eyes. One eye retains paua shell, the other three have red sealing wax remaining. The rau (nose) is rounded and bears marks of use.
