letter, 25/06/1934 to Mrs Ritchie, Explains the name 'mutton bird' is a sailors name for certain fat petrels and adopted by the early settlers, Maori called it 'oi-I'. There is no particular island called Mutton Bird Island, but several islands are known that the birds breed on in the Foveaux Strait, they also breed on Kapiti and on other islands off the North Island.
