Tūhura Otago Museum is excited to announce that its Pacific Cultures Gallery will be closing for the next couple of months for a much-needed refresh. As part of the gallery's upgrade, the museum has invited leaders from the Dunedin Pacific communities to join the museum's collections team this Saturday to review the first phase of the update.
The Pacific Cultures Gallery, which opened in the early 1960s, has largely remained unchanged. In recognition that the gallery is now outdated, the museum is working closely with the Pacific communities of Dunedin. Although funding challenges have meant that a full redevelopment isn't yet possible, the museum is committed to making smaller, meaningful improvements that will benefit the community.
Director Ian Griffin acknowledged that while the museum's budget is still tight, they are committed to implementing gradual changes that will have a lasting impact. "Our collection team is looking forward to these long-overdue updates," said Griffin. "While we may not be able to complete everything at once, we're focused on making as much progress as possible."
Leota Meredith, Pasifika Engagement Co-ordinator, described the event as a significant milestone for both the museum and the Pacific community. "This is an historic moment for the museum and the Pacific community," said Meredith. "It's an exciting time to strengthen our relationships and work together for a brighter future."
Tūhura Otago Museum's Pacific Collection is internationally significant, with several standout pieces that continue to be a key feature of the gallery. Phase one of the upgrade will include updates to signage and labels, new paint and lighting, and a reinterpretation of objects.
