Whakarite kai

Round wooden kumete. Shallow depth, approximately half of height. Rim and bottom are flattened. Two handles on either side depict human faces in high relief. The exterior is carved in a rauponga whakarere (ridge and triangular notch) pattern.

Wooden adze haft. Handle is round in cross section and chisel marks visible on surface, darkened near the grip. Triangular platform at the distal end, with notches and a deep groove at the edge. A mount is lashed with plaited fibre into the hollow groove, projecting beyond the platform. The mount has a deep rectangular groove, open at one end, for inserting an adze. It appears to be made using metal tools.

Complete tatā (canoe bailer). Made from dark brown rimu using steel tools. Curved handle projects over the scoop, with a manaia head carved at the butt. Below the handle, at the back of the scoop, is another carving and two perforations. Two pieces of loose wood on the carving have been re-attached in the past with heavy furniture nails. Scoop has a slight ridge on the interior, creating a straight-sided pouring edge

Complete slate knife. Surface is grounded on both sides, with flake scarring on both surfaces. Cutting edge is straight and sharp with bevel on both surfaces. Haft end is flat

Complete wooden hoe (paddle). Double-sided human or bird carving at the proximal end, with four perforations. The proximal edge has been burnt on one side. A double-sided human face is carved where the handle meets the blade, with spiral and pākati (dog-tooth) patterns throughout. Blade is an elongated oval, tapering to a point at the distal end, with two perforations. The distal edge has been flattened, with chisel marks evident on the side edges.

Complete argillite knife. Surface is grounded on both sides. Cutting edge is blunt and curved with bevel present on both surfaces. Haft end is tapered.

Complete one-piece bone fishhook. There is notching along the exterior length from the head to the tip. The tip is sharp. The bottom of the shank has a knob that is notched into three. There is a knob on teh head which is notched into three.

Slate knife. One half has sides that are rounded and curved, the opposite half has sides that are chipped and thinner in width. The surfaces of the scraper are ground where not chipped.

Broken slate knife. No discernable cutting edge. Surface is grounded on both sides, with flake scarring on both surfaces.

Complete tuki (mouthpiece for a calabash), previously broken in four pieces and glued back together. Light brown and dark brown wood. Circular, slightly flared at the top rim. Interior surface is smooth. Exterior surface is carved with rauponga (ridges and triangular notches) pattern. Six small perforations at the top rim and ten perforations at the base. Base has a ridge on the rim for fitting onto gourd.

Large wooden kumete. Surface is rough, with adze marks visible. One end shallow with a pouring spout on the edge. Other end is deeper with a slightly squared-off edge and a deep crack. One side of the base is broken with a large hole.
