Complete adze. Pounamu. Asymmetrical oval cross-section. The surface is bruised and flaked, and ground on the front. There is no distinction between the butt and the blade. The bevel is continuous with the blade. The cutting edge is irregular and sharp.
He kura
Complete pounamu pendant. Attached to pounamu toggle D40.539 by a brown three-play rope. Dark green bowenite/tangiwai variety, chatoyant and translucent. Surface is ground. Cross section is lenticular. Seven notches on the proximal edge and a suspension hole drilled from both sides. One side edge is straight, and the other is curved; somewhat squared off at the distal end. Pendant is bevelled on both sides.
Pounamu toggle. Attached to D40.538 by a brown three-ply rope. Light green tahutahi variety; source believed to be Cascade Plateau area. Surface is ground. Triangular shape. Perforation through the centre of the toggle, drilled from both sides. One side has two bevels running lengthwise, demarcated by lines.
Taoka Māori
Piece of worked greenstone. Narrow rectangular piece with lenticular cross-section a saw marks in the centre along the length on both sides. Mostly ground with flake scars on the ends and sides.
Complete adze. Greenstone. Asymmetrical lenticular cross-section. The surface is mostly ground with several flake scars. There is no distinction between the butt and the blade. There is a small asymmetrical bevel that is continuous with the blade. The cutting edge is curved and sharp.
Incomplete adze, blade and bevel end only. Speckled brown stone. The cross-section is rectangular at the bevel and oval with square sides at the blade. The surface is ground and bruised with a large flake scar on the proper left front. The bevel is triangular, concave and demarcated by slight ridges. The cutting edge is curved and chipped.
Complete adze Cross-section is triangular, apex is towards the front Surface is flaked. No differentiation between butt and blade. Bevel is continuous with blade. Cutting edge is sharp and curved.
Complete adze Cross-section is oval Surface of front is ground. Surface of back is rough. No differentiation between butt and blade, sides taper towards poll. Bevel is continuous with blade, cutting edge is sharp and curved, chipped.
Complete adze. Light brownish green stone. The cross-section is rectangular. The surface is mostly ground, with flake scars on the butt and poll. There is no distinction between the butt and the blade. The sides taper in towards the poll. A straight line distinguishes the bevel from the blade. The cutting edge is curved and sharp with a chip on the proper right.
