Complete adze. Argillite. Black. Cross-section is oval. Surface is ground down front and back, flaking and bruising on sides. Undifferentiated between butt and blade. Bevel is continuous with blade, cutting edge is sharp and curved, lightly chipped. "Kaikoura" written on back.

Fragment patu onewa with four ornamental grooves and has a drilled hole for the suspending cord. There is a red ink stain with surface scratches all over. No chips. Looks to be broken where the blade would have been.
