Mahi whakairo
Complete adze Circular at poll, plano convex (front flattened) at blade. Bruised. Butt has minor differentiation, sides have been slightly reduced and shoulders slightly raised. Bevel is continuous with the blade. Cutting edge is blunt, smooth and rounded.
Broken adze, butt and most of blade remaining. Black stone. Cross-section is rectangular. Surface is ground. No differentiation between butt and blade; sides taper toward poll. Bevel is demarcated by a line. Cutting edge has broken off. "McKays." inscription.
Complete adze. Grey stone. Cross-section is rectangular. Surface is bruised. Sides of the butt are slightly reduced the proper right side; proper left side tapers toward the poll. Bevel is demarcated by an irregular line. Cutting edge has been flaked off. Large flake broken off proper left side of blade. "McKays" inscription.
Complete adze. Oval at poll, plano-convex (front flattened) at blade. Bruised and flaked with small areas ground. Butt has major differentiation, sides and front have been reduced and sides and front of shoulders raised. Bevel demarcated by lines running from corners up toward centre of blade. Cutting edge is rough, blunt and slightly curved.
Adze roughout Oval cross-section The surface is bruised and mostly unground stone. There is no differentiation between the butt and the blade. The bevel is demarcated by a line and is unfinished. The cutting edge is blunt and unfinished.
Broken adze. Large fragment missing from proper right of cutting edge and butt. Asymmetrical cross-section The surface is ground, with bruising and flaking on the sides and back. There is no differentiation between the butt and the blade. The sides taper towards the poll end. The bevel is demarcated by a chin due to flaking on the back of the blade. The cutting edge is sharp and curved, with a large portion of the proper right side broken.
Complete adze. Black stone. Cross-section is trapezoidal, with the back narrower than the front. Surface is ground with bruising on the sides. Sides of the butt are reduced to form shoulders. Bevel is demarcated by a line. Cutting edge is straight and sharp. "Onepoto" inscription.
Taoka Māori
Complete silcrete blade. Dark red and dark brown in colour. Bifacial retouch on the proper left side.
Broken schist knife, no discernable cutting edge. Surface is flaked on both sides.
Complete adze (hogback). Stone. Grey speckled with black and white. Cross-section of blade is rectangular, cross-section of butt is oval. Surface is ground on back of blade, bruised on other surfaces. Major differentiation between butt and blade, front heavily reduced forming large shoulder. Bevel is continuous with blade, cutting edge is blunt and straight, chipped. Ardlussa written on back.
