Beaded woman's circlet headband

Complete kaitaka patea cloak. Woven from muka (flax fibre) with horizontal aho (wefts). Narrow wool taniko borders on the side edges and a broad border on the bottom. Taniko is woven in black and white chevron and diamond pattern, with triangles in red, pink, green, and blue; faded throughout. The body of the cloak and the top border are undecorated.

Broken ribbonwood piupiu. A section of proper left tags missing. The tags have been arranged in alternating vertical lines of undyed and dyed (red and dark purple) bands. These tags are accompanied by four 3 ply whiri (plaits). The proper left whiri is missing. The whiri are dyed red and purple, with one whenu (strand) left undyed. The waistband is approximately 7cm wide with three weft weaves. The front of the waistband has been covered with a decorative twill (diagonal weave). The waistband has a decorative edging at the top, attached using cotton thread. At each end of the waistband a 4 ply whiri extension of different fibre has been attached. One detached tag accompanies the garment.

Unfinished paepaeroa cloak, in process of manufacture. The paepaeroa cloak is supported on two weaving sticks (turuturu). The starting decorative (taniko) border forms a side of the cloak (kahu) when worn. The body of the cloak (kaupapa) is twined row by row from left to right, and red wool is worked in to form a decorative finish for the neck edge on the right of the cloak. The warp (whenu) for the lower taniko border is attached at this stage and lies ready at the left to be worked when the rest of the garment is complete. The cloak is then turned back 90 degrees and the taniko border worked. The taniko on this paepaeroa cloak is 5cm wide, using dyed black wool, with a triangle pattern worked in white and red wool. The weaving sticks taper slightly at the bottom, and reduced at the top with knob to secure the paepaeroa to. Between the two weaving sticks the paepaeroa is secured to a metal rod.

Complete kahu huruhuru with kiwi and pheasant feathers. The top edge is a two ply twist, except one at each of the ends, where the warps become part of the fringe. There are two attachments for tying - 1 is a piece of bias binding, the other a tassel in red, black and cream wool. The cloak is of cotton, with two-ply interlocking weft. Along the left and right edges there is a twist of blue, red, black and white wool. The centre of the cloak is kiwi feathers with pheasant feathers as a 6-8cm wide border on the left, right and bottom edges. The border is in square blocks of colours; down the sides there are alternating squares of black then brown. Along the bottom there are alternating squares of black, brown, and white feathers.

Black and white woollen kete. Weaving with synthetic wefts and handle and decorated with blue/green domestic fowl feathers. Warps of cream wool held together with cream wefts in double pair twine. Centre four warp rows cross over stitch - outer two of five warps crossed. Feathers attached along top and bottom with double pair twine. Black twisted woollen cord attached in pattern above feathers. Lined with blue satin sheen fabric. Single black braided cord handle (synthetic) attached on either side.

Complete string of 68 glass trade beads, strung together on a thick piece of cotton string. There is a pattern of one large mid blue bead with two smaller dark blue beads that repeats on both sides till the centre where the pattern changes and becomes two large dark blue beads followed by two large mid blue beads.

Complete kahu huruhuru. The garments kaupapa (main body) is muka (flax fibres), the surface is covered with scattered, multicoloured feathers. There are two main vetical lines of solid feathers. In the centre of the kaupapa is a T shaped block of dark grey and orange feathers. The kaupapa is edged in a solid lines of feathers and a 2 ply red and green woolen whiri (plait). This same wool edging is used as the weft line across the top seam and as two 3 ply whiri extensions from the top seam creating ties. The top corners have cream fringing. A linen and velcro attachment has been sewn along the back of the top seam using cotton.

Kete Muka (Wall Pocket). Woven from undyed muka using whatu aho rua (two-pair weft-twining). Kaupapa (body) decorated with mawhitiwhiti (woven cross stitch pattern work) and some whenu (warps) are loosely woven to add decoration. Muka (Flax fibre) cord is looped through weft stitches along the body to add a swirling decorative element. Two muka tassels attached to muka cords constructed using the miro (rolling) technique feature on the front. Outer edge frill work is woven independently and sewn to the item with thread. Lined with pink coloured fabric.

Kete Muka (Wall Pocket) With closing flap/lid. Woven from undyed muka using whatu aho rua (two-pair weft-twining). Kaupapa (body) decorated with mawhitiwhiti (woven cross stitch pattern work) and some whenu (warps) are loosely woven to add decoration. Muka (Flax fiber) cord is looped through weft stitches along the body to add a swirling decorative element. Two muka tassels attached to muka cords constructed using the miro (rolling) technique feature on the front with two similar cords without tassels on the lower front. Outer edge frill work is woven independently and sewn to the item with thread.

Kete Muka (Tea Cosy). Woven from undyed muka using whatu aho rua (two-pair weft-twining). Kaupapa (body) decorated with mawhitiwhiti (woven cross stitch pattern work) and some whenu (warps) are loosely woven to add decoration. Muka (Flax fibre) cord is looped through weft stitches along the body to add a swirling decorative element. Two muka tassels attached to muka cords constructed using the miro (rolling) technique feature on the front and back . Outer edge frill work is woven independently and sewn to the item with thread.

Complete piupiu. Flax tags are attached to an approximately 11cm deep waistband. The tags have been sporadically scraped and dyed with paru. The scraped areas form three distinct motifs: lines, dashes and diamonds. From the waistband the motifs repeat in the pattern line, dashes, diamonds, dashes, line. The waistband has a tāniko design of alternating pātikitiki (diamonds) and stars. The waistband is formed of wool with a flax edging along the top. This edge extends to form ties at each end. Each tie has a knot in it.

Complete kahu huruhuru. There are kiwi feathers in the centre of the kahu huruhuru, with a green feather border; 5cm on the left side and 6cm border on the right side.There is a purple and grey herringbone stitch border at the top edge, and a gold and black twine at the bottom edge. There are two lengths of harakeke twine with loops at the end that are worked along the top edge, approximately 15cm from the right and left sides.

Complete pounamu pendant with faded red cloth tied at proximal end. Dark green and black. Chatoyant with high transparency. Octagonal cross section. Tapered at each end. Proximal end is rounded with a suspension hole drilled from each side. Distal end is flattened.

Border from the neck edge of the garment. Frieze of vine leaves with fragmentary heads., Sixth to Seventh Century A.D., Warp: natural linen, 16 tripled per cm, Weft: natural linen, dyed wool, 54 per cm., Woven tapestry with supplementary weft, plaiting, plain weave with weft ribbing.
